animal and dating
Hi guys - I am dating a great person, but they do not like dogs at all, and even call themselves a "cat person." I don't want to alienate this person, but at the same time, I also want to be able to have several dogs in my life - and to be with someone who loves dogs as much as I do. Otherwise, how can a healthy relationship ever develop with these issues? Any thoughts? SabinelAnswers

Were they to ask you to get rid of a pet you have already commited to then I would say keep the dog and put the relationship to sleep. Though if you are talking about fictional future pets then you may just be looking for a reason to sabotage the relationship and using "Im a dog person; Im a cat person" as an excuse to end it.

This might prove to turn into a good middle ground, or you two could at least give it a few weeks and see how it works out [I understand that sometimes cats and dogs bond well, especially if they grow up together, but I don’t speak from experience here]. You could also call your vet, and see what his or her perspective is on the matter. However, if there a loving connection in the relationship, that's an important factor in itself, and really shouldn't be minimized in a society that can often makes people feel so alone.
So a loving dog can truly be an integral part of a family, although without another human being around to share in that love, that in itself can also create tension. So if possible, let me know any of your new thoughts about all this, as I tried to put the topic in some perspective, and hopefully that might help! -Kate
