What is the best way to serve divorce papers? My cousin filed for divorce and is having problems serving her ex with divorce papers. She is doing it herself to save on money (single mom of 3) . He will not accept the papers. Does anyone know of a good way to serve him the papers without using a court appointed person to do it? He cant hide forever and she only has 4 days to get them to him. Thanks.

This is not relationship advice, this is legal advice.

Your cousin needs to find out the law in her jurisdiction; I've never heard of a place where a court will accept service from one of the parties to an action.

Paying a professional will cut her off from what appears to be a juicy little shot of self-righteous drama, but the pro will also know what to do if he "will not accept the papers."

If she misses a filing deadline, she will have to wait a little longer for her divorce. It doesn't mean the world will come to an end. It might mean she takes the trouble to find what she is doing, next time.

Most jurisdictions also accept 'service by publication,' but she absolutely HAS to find out if hers does, and how to do it.

Would she try to save money by doing her own car repairs, or pulling her own teeth? Maybe she can go to a cheaper cellphone plan, or get rid of cable TV. Anything but trying to save money by serving your own divorce papers. People end up dead playing games like that.

It's a bad idea. Period.

Hope this helps. Good luck to her (and to her cousin, who cares about her!) and good karma to us all.
